After wisdom teeth removal

What to Expect After Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery

Following wisdom teeth removal surgery, you may experience minor bleeding and discomfort. It’s advisable to cover your pillowcase to prevent blood stains. Pain levels vary among individuals, ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain. Expect some swelling, typically peaking on the second day and subsiding by the third. Using ice packs on the first day can help minimize swelling. Although it may feel uncomfortable initially, applying ice is recommended. By the third day, you may notice stiffness in your jaw muscles, making it difficult to open your mouth normally. Applying moist heat on the second and third days can help relax the muscles and improve mouth opening. It’s advisable to limit activities for a few days and adhere closely to post-operative instructions for maximum comfort during the initial recovery period. Allow your body time to heal before resuming social, academic, or athletic activities. Most patients start feeling better and on the road to recovery within 3 to 5 days.

Potential Complications After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

As with any medical procedure, complications or unforeseen outcomes can arise. Some potential complications following wisdom tooth extraction include:

  • Damage to the sensory nerve supplying sensation to the lips and tongue
  • Sinus communication
  • Infections
  • Dry socket

After the procedure, Dr Leo will review your post-operative instructions. It’s important to follow these instructions carefully for optimal comfort post-surgery. If you received sedation, you’ll likely feel comfortable and drowsy upon leaving the office. Most patients prefer to return home and rest, avoiding physical or academic activities for a few days.

Although rare, unexpected outcomes such as delayed healing, infection, or post-operative numbness or tingling in the lip, chin, or tongue may occur. Dr Leo will discuss any relevant post-operative events and address your concerns promptly. If you feel that such complications have occurred, text 1300 800 363 or e-mail us at reception@drleoham.com.au.
