Implant dentures, also known as overdentures, are a type of denture used to replace restore function and aesthetics. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely solely on suction or adhesives to stay in place, implant dentures are supported by dental implants that are placed first.
What makes implant dentures a superior option?
- Attachment System: The denture is designed with special attachments or connectors that securely snap onto the dental implants. This attachment system allows the denture to be firmly anchored in place while still being removable for cleaning and maintenance. There are many names and brands for such attachments.
- Stability and Function: By being securely attached to dental implants, implant dentures offer improved stability and function compared to traditional dentures. They do not shift or slip out of place while eating or speaking, providing a more comfortable and confident experience for the wearer.
- Bone Preservation: One significant benefit of implant dentures is that they help preserve the jawbone. The presence of dental implants stimulates the bone, preventing bone loss or deterioration that commonly occurs with traditional dentures.
- Affordability: The cost of implant-supported dentures is lower than that of a fully fixed option (Such as All-On-4). This provides an excellent alternative for patients who are considering a full-mouth implant supported option.

Process and maintenance of implant dentures
Both partial dentures and full dentures can be supported by implants. For the upper jaw, 4 to 6 implants are required to support a full denture. For the lower jaw, 2 to 4 is typical. The number of implants required depends on many different factors, including your age, build, previous dental history, condition of remaining opposing teeth, and others.
Generally, dental implants are first placed, and they are “buried” underneath the gums to allow for healing for a period of 2 to 4 months. Following this healing period, Dr Leo will then expose the implants and add the attachments to allow the denture to clip into the implants.
Maintenance is simple for implant dentures. The attachments placed on the implants are permanent, and do not require replacement. The attachments on the denture need to be replaced every 2 years on average. This is an inexpensive and easy process that is done with the denture outside the mouth and takes about 5 minutes.
