Post-Placement Care Instructions for Dental Implants
Following dental implant surgery, it’s crucial to allow the wound to heal undisturbed. Refrain from rinsing, spitting, or touching the surgical area on the day of the procedure. You may notice a metal healing abutment protruding through the gum tissue.
Bleeding
Some bleeding or a slight red tinge in saliva is normal for 24 hours. If bleeding is excessive (mouth fills rapidly with blood), apply gentle pressure with a gauze pad directly on the wound for 30 minutes. Contact us if bleeding persists for further guidance.
Swelling
Expect swelling after surgery. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack or a cold compress on the cheek near the surgery site continuously for the first 36 hours.
Diet
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid hot liquids or foods. Consume soft foods and liquids on the day of surgery and gradually return to a normal diet unless advised otherwise.
Pain
Begin taking pain medication before the local anesthetic wears off. For moderate pain, Paracetamol and Ibuprofen can be taken every 6 hours as directed. Use prescribed medication for severe pain, following instructions carefully.
Antibiotics
Take prescribed antibiotics as directed to prevent infection.
Oral Hygiene
Maintain good oral hygiene for proper healing. If prescribed an antibiotic rinse, use before bed on the night of surgery, and twice daily thereafter. Additionally, rinse with warm salt water 4-5 times a day, especially after meals. Gently brush your teeth and the healing abutments.
Activity
Limit physical activity immediately after surgery, as vigorous activity may cause throbbing or bleeding. If bleeding occurs during exercise, discontinue activity. Keep in mind your reduced nourishment intake may weaken you and affect your ability to exercise.
Wearing Prosthesis
Avoid using partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures for at least 10 days following surgery, unless absolutely necessary for cosmetic reasons.
