Following the removal of a single tooth, it’s crucial to allow a blood clot to form to cease bleeding and initiate healing. Bite down on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the procedure. If bleeding persists, apply another gauze pad and bite firmly for an additional 30 minutes, repeating if necessary to control bleeding.

Once the blood clot forms, avoid disturbing or dislodging it. Refrain from vigorous rinsing, using straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing teeth near the extraction site for 72 hours, as these actions could disrupt the clot and impede healing. Limit strenuous exercise for the next 24 hours to prevent increased bleeding from the extraction site.

Expect some pain and swelling after the extraction. Applying an ice pack or a sealed bag of frozen peas or corn to the area can minimize swelling. Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Typically, swelling diminishes after 48 hours.

Follow the instructions for pain medication carefully and contact our office if the medication doesn’t alleviate discomfort. If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the full course even if infection symptoms disappear. Stay hydrated and consume nutritious, soft foods on the extraction day, gradually returning to a regular diet as comfort allows.

Resume your usual dental hygiene routine after 24 hours, including brushing and flossing at least once daily. This aids healing and maintains oral hygiene.

After a few days, you should feel better and can resume normal activities. Contact our clinic that you were treated in if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, persistent swelling for 2-3 days, or adverse reactions to medication.
